Wow! Grateful to see so much community support for this amazing facility! Your comments and phone calls are noted. Agreed that the Dakan Arena and all of Camp Pioneer are an asset to the public! The director is currently working with law enforcement, insurance and contractors to facilitate repairs so that the facility may return to use. This is requiring a lot of time and thus phone calls may not be returned efficiently. But please rest assured that your concerns are appreciated.
Camp Pioneer is governed by a volunteer board, who is committed to the facility and donates countless hours to its management. The annual operating budget just to cover facility utilities and maintenance is approximately $96,000. Funding for the operating budget comes from rental fees and the Randolph County Commission. Capital improvements are funded by private donations, grants and the Randolph County Commission.
So, how can you help preserve this facility?
1. Donate to our operating funds to help pay for repairs and reopen the facility. This can be accomplished by:
a. Dropping a check directly to the WVU Extension Office in Elkins.
b. Donate to the Camp Pioneer Fund at the WVU Foundation. Funds can be earmarked for specific projects or the general fund.
2. Contact your legislators and let them know how special this facility is and how important it is to keep it available to the public.
3. Once the facility is back open or when using the facility, help by;
a. Demonstrating general courtesy (turning off lights when leaving the arena, picking up manure left around the arena, placing trash in receptacles, refraining from moving furniture & equipment that may be set up for other events).
b. Reporting abuse or damage.
For now, the gates will remain closed to secure the buildings. We will keep you updated when it may reopen for use. Thank you for your support!

Very thankful for the camp director and all her hard work at rectifying the problem and working towards a solution.
Show producers (no matter the discipline) will not pay more to rent a facility than what they may profit. I’ve helped put on a few barrel shows and every time it cost more to rent it and the work that we had to do to get arena ready was unbelievable. I’d love to put shows on there but it’s just now affordable
My wife n I was a big part of the 4h for years , both boys . I done. Lot up there years ago. I wouldn’t mind to help again when I have the extra time. I don’t mind to help with some maintenance here and there if needed. Just give me a call.
Due to increased vandalism, the Dakan Arena and agricultural campus is closed for public use. Gates will be opened for specific public events or camping reservations only. … See MoreSee Less

You already have NO events that want to host there because the prices are absolutely RIDICULOUS the only traffic you have is local horse people coming to practice as what it was supposed to be always free for public use. Might as well tear down the arena. Lmao.
It’s such a shame that when something nice is made available to the public there are a select few who always ruin it for the masses! I hope that you’re able to recover from what damage has been done and can continue being a positive place for our community!
Really sad it would be nice if they would at least allow people to reserve to practice we have no where and we traveled over regularly to get riding time especially when it was raining.
